The Big Smoke
Toronto nicknamed “The Big Smoke” is located in the Ontario province and is the largest city by population in Canada the current population is over 2.5 million people making it the 5th largest city in North America and a booming metropolis for many visitors. Media in Toronto is bigger than any other Englishspeaking city in Canada: It is home to media giants like the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation CTV which is currently the biggest private broadcaster The Naked News and flagship stations Global and CityTV it also is home to sports stations such as The Sports Network The Score and Rogers Sportsnet. You also will find several major newspapers and magazines headquartered in the city. When it comes to sports Toronto is home to sports franchises for six major organizations: The National Hockey League Toronto Maple Leafs the Canadian Football League Toronto Argonauts the National Lacrosse League Toronto Rock Major League Baseball The Toronto Blue Jays and Major League Soccer Toronto FC. Toronto is currently the only city outside of the U.S. to have a baseball team and a basketball team. With its bustling population and culture it’s no surprise that the “Big Smoke” is also home to Canada’s version of Wall Street known simply as Bay Street. Bay Street houses the Toronto Stock Exchange currently the 7th largest stock exchange in the world by market capitalization In addition all five of Canada’s largest banks are headquartered on Bay Street and most businesses are incorporated in Toronto. You can’t talk about Toronto without talking about the attractions and the culture of the city. The most notable and the one that gets the most tourism is the CN Tower. Standing 1815 feet 553 meters tall the CN Tower held the record of the world’s largest tower for over 30 years. Just to the west of the CN Tower is Rogers Field which is the sporting arena for the Blue Jays and the Argonauts. Toronto also is home to dozens of dance and ballet companies the Toronto Zoo has thousands of different kinds of animals. The Ice Hockey Hall of Fame is also located here as is the Royal Ontario Museum a major hub for natural history and culture from all over the world. Taking your kids to the Ontario Science Centre is a worthwhile endeavor as the centre has plenty of science displays and handson activities that would generally appeal to children. Toronto also has the National Ballet of Canada the Toronto Symphony Orchestra the Canadian Opera Company and the Canadian Stage Company. The city of Toronto is considered extremely diverse. While 53 of the population is of British Irish French or Italian you also have several other ethnicities no one of which dominates the “minority” market and the populace is as diverse as the city itself as far as cultures go you have South Asian Filipino Black/AfroCaribbean Latin American and Chinese people that live in the city. Although English Chinese and Italian are the three largest spoken languages the 911 system in Toronto is equipped to respond in over 150 languages. In conclusion whether you’re 15 or 115 there’s something for everyone to see in Toronto. There is enough music culture diversity and sports to last people a lifetime. So if you’re planning a trip to Canada this might be a great destination for you to stop at and take in the sights and sounds of the Big Smoke.
