Riding In Style At The Royal Carriage Museum

The Royal Carriage Museum is a hark back to the days when horse drawn carriage was the order of the day and the internal combustion engine was a thing of science fiction. It is located near the Northern entrance to Dusit Garden which houses a number of other buildings connected to the Thai royal family. Likewise the Royal Carriage Museum is also closely intertwined with the Thai royal family it holds 13 refurbished horse drawn carriages that were once used by the countrys King during the 19th and early 20th century.

Almost all the models that are seen her were used back in the day during the reign of King Chulalongkorn. The horse drawn carriages are of European style and were the epitome of stylish travel during their heyday. Amongst the exhibits is the glass state carriage made by Stuart and Company in Calcutta India.

Another popular exhibit is the custom made coach by Alfred Adler in London. A number of other horse drawn carriages that were made in London can also be seen here. Although motorized transport was introduced to Thailand in 1897 the royal family continued using the horse drawn carriages well into the 20th century. By the year 1925 during the reign of King Rama VI there were well over 2500 carriages in Bangkok. However this seems inconsequential when compared with the tens of thousands of motor vehicles on Bangkoks roads today.

Opened in the year 1991 the Royal Carriage Museum in Bangkok definitely preserves a very special part of Thai history. In addition this is also the only museum at the Dusit Garden where visitors are allowed to take photographs. Located close to the Dusit Garden historical area are Bangkok serviced apartments that offer excellent accommodation option as well as great access to the city.
